‘I remember interviewing carers about their expe ‘I remember interviewing carers about their experiences, and it was the pain in their eyes I recognised – that pain of losing their loved one even though they were right in front of them.

‘This connection that I had developed to carers of people with dementia from a South Asian community led me to want to research this area further, and develop a deeper understanding of my community.

‘Why were we not allowed to talk about controversial or taboo subjects like mental health, dementia or alcoholism? Why is there a sense of shame and where has it come from?

'Because many Indian languages simply don’t have a word for dementia, quite often the symptoms of dementia get translated as “memory loss” or “mental ill health”. This isn’t just an incorrect interpretation, it can be further stigmatising.

'It can leave people embarrassed, confused, isolated, and feeling unable to seek help.'

As #SouthAsianHeritageMonth begins, I explain why people from the South Asian community are less likely to get a timely dementia diagnosis, and why I committed to helping this change: https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/blog/south-asian-communities-dementia-deserve-better-support

At the Health Research Centre at @wlvuni , we have a clear vision to inspire, promote and develop health research that is not only inclusive in the way it’s carried out but also in producing better health outcomes for all communities.

We were incredibly proud to have sponsored the first ever Award for the Best Inclusive Dementia Care in our Diverse Society of the 13th National Dementia Care Awards 2023 Journal of Dementia Care.

It was also an honour to co-judge the Award for
Outstanding Dementia Care Innovation.

Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners. You are all inspiring and I applaud you for the tremendous work you are all doing to make the world a better place for people living with dementia 👏🏼🙏🏼

Dementia is more than just memory loss. It can als Dementia is more than just memory loss. It can also involve visual perceptual problems. As an educator and trainer in dementia care, this is a symptom that is less understood by people and often gets missed.

Watch this short video to hear an example of how this may be experienced by someone living with visual perceptual problems in their dementia, and how can you support them to live well.

Dementia doesn’t just affect older people. Over Dementia doesn’t just affect older people. Over 42,000 people in the UK are living with “young-onset dementia” (before the age of 65 years).

Although they experience similar symptoms to their older peers, the impact on their lives as a younger person is significantly different.

If you’re south Asian, you may have additional barriers due to the lack of awareness and understanding of dementia in your community.

Filmed as part of the NIHR funded ADAPT study, Masood Qureshi, talks about some of these issues.

To find out about the ADAPT study and where you can get information about dementia in different languages, visit: www.drjutlla.com/resources/ (link in bio).

If you are worried about yourself, or someone close to you visit: alzheimers.org.uk/memoryloss to use their interactive Symptoms Checklist (endorsed by the Royal College of General Practitioners) and get support and information about a diagnosis.

Today, I wear the Alzheimer’s Society flower in remembrance of him as part of the Forget Me Not Appeal: https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/forget-me-not-appeal

This flower, for me, is a reminder to celebrate his life, uphold his values and keep making a difference in this world.

Happy birthday Kam, you will never be forgotten.

Who do you wear your flower for?
