Dementia resources available in Punjabi

by karan-dkj | May 16, 2022 | Public updates

This is a proud moment for me and so I had to write a blog about it. I have wanted to produce resources about dementia for the South Asian community for some time now however; in order to get funding to produce something; you have to firstly prove that it is needed....

Throughout my journey in dementia care, I have bee Throughout my journey in dementia care, I have been inspired by so many amazing women - women who are living with dementia, caring for a loved one with dementia, front line workers, inspiring community members and researchers - all of whom use their life experience, passion, time, energy and brain power to make a difference in this world.

Furthermore, there are women out there who are battling everyday with the inequalities they face and pressures to conform to cultural and community norms. I want you to know that today, and every day, I applaud and celebrate you for your determination, bravery and strength.

Together, we can make a difference.

Hello world, There are some new faces around here Hello world,

There are some new faces around here 👋🏼😊 and there have been some changes in my world too, so I think it's time for a re-introduction.

I’m Karan Jutlla, a passionate researcher and educator dedicated to promoting cultural inclusivity in #dementia care.

I launched my website having worked in this field for 17 years and learning about the health inequalities that exist for people living with dementia, especially those from ethnic minority communities. Alongside my existing post as Dementia Lead at the University of Wolverhampton, I've also work on various research projects, notably more recently in collaboration with Alzheimer's Society

I’m delighted to announce that I have now been appointed as the new Head of the Health Research Centre at the University of Wolverhampton.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a centre of applied and inclusive practice in health research, which will help promote and inspire health research that is not only inclusive in the way it's carried out but also in producing better health outcomes for all communities.

I've often said that “if you can get it right for people living with dementia, you can get it right for everyone.” So, this opportunity will allow me to apply all the skills, knowledge and expertise that I've gained over the years to lead more inclusive practice in other health disciplines.

While continuing my work within dementia care and dedicating time in this specialism, the position of Head of the Health Research Centre will also strengthen my core vision, mission and values for #inclusive dementia care. I have a number of upcoming dementia projects, which I’ll be sharing with you soon so, watch this space.

Christmas can be a joyful time of year but for som Christmas can be a joyful time of year but for some, it can be a difficult time too. Families living with dementia often talk about how sad Christmas time can feel as they reflect upon 'what used to be.' Last year I spoke with one of my nursing students and in conversation she told me how their Christmas tree had lit up everyone's lives. This is because her Grandmother, who lives with dementia, found some sort of peace and magic in the Christmas tree lights. So, I did a bit of homework and had to share this post with you all.

In doing my research, it dawned on me that Christmas really can be a magical time of year for people living with dementia - a world packed with bright lights and bright colours can be amazing therapy for some. However; I do say this with caution as too much 'busy-ness' can be distracting and frustrating for some, depending upon their type of dementia.

If you are living with/know of a person with dementia who has a Christmass tree up this year with lights, I'd be really interested to know if it's making a difference to their well-being in some way. You can DM me or leave a comment below.

Wishing you all a safe and magical Christmas.

For anyone who is caring for a loved one with deme For anyone who is caring for a loved one with dementia, facing systematic, family and personal challenges - this Award is for you!

I previously posted that our film “Kiran” representing the challenging experiences of south Asian carers of a loved one with dementia, was nominated in 6 categories of the @royaltelevisionsociety Awards.

On Friday 25th November, Kiran won the Award for Best Craft - Post Production. This film was created as part of our NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) funded ADAPT study led by Professor Richard Cheston and Dr Sahdia Parveen.

I had the pleasure of receiving the Award alongside filmmaker @bhullabeghal of @bluebellfilms and the lead actress @ambika_s91 who together did a stunning job at producing such a powerful, emotive short film.

As an academic specialising in inclusivity in dementia care, this really felt like a break-through moment - to see a film depicting the challenges faced by so many people as part of research make the big screen and receive recognition for its production and purpose.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this project, and a huge congratulations to all the other winners roo 🏆

Finally, a BIG THANK YOU to the carer representatives on this project, who shared their experiences with us. Without your bravery and time, Kiran would not have been possible.

You can watch Kiran by visiting our ADAPT toolkit, where you can find it on the home page: https://raceequalityfoundation.org.uk/adapt/ (link in bio for IG users)

It was a real honour to attend the Asian Business It was a real honour to attend the Asian Business Awards yesterday at the Park Plaza in London. I had the privilege of talking about my work in dementia care for south Asian communities with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and met some very inspiring entrepreneurs and businessmen working in the health and education industry.

This was not only a great opportunity to celebrate the success of Asians who arrived in Britain as refugees 50 years ago following the the Idi Amin expulsion but, also raise the profile of dementia amongst influential Asian leaders.

Thank you Asian Media Group for the invitation and congratulations to all the winners 🏆

What a fabulous, packed-out, meaningful 2 days at What a fabulous, packed-out, meaningful 2 days at the UK Dementia Congress. Thank you to the Journal of Dementia Care and members of the EDI working group for giving us a platform to discuss the importance of "Equity" (rather than Equality), Diversity and Inclusion in Dementia Care.

It was a real honour to talk about this as part of the Tom Kitwood Memorial Address. I first came across the work of Tom Kitwood in 2006 when I started my PhD researching experiences of the Sikh community caring for a loved one with dementia. It is here that I first learnt about Kitwood's approach to person centred dementia care - encouraging me to think about its relevance and importance for supporting the inclusion of diverse communities in dementia care. I attended my first UK Dementia Congress in 2007 to present this research.

16 years later, at the 16th Dementia Congress, I delivered the Tom Kitwood Memorial Address on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Dementia Care alongside my colleagues who highlighted the challenges for Pakistani women (Dr Nadia Wahid) the Punjabi community (Lee Allen) the LGBTQ+ community (Barry Moss) the African Caribbean community (David Truswell) and a lived experience as an African Caribbean male (Ronald Amanze). Together, we were able to demonstrate the urgent need for more targeted, personalised support to enable equitable access to support services for people with dementia and their family members and carers.
