by karan-dkj | May 16, 2022 | Public updates

Last year, I conducted research with south Asians Last year, I conducted research with south Asians caring for a loved one with dementia in England, to understand their experiences of post-diagnostic support, and whether their support needs were being met.

Commissioned by Alzheimer’s Society, the research painted an alarming picture of the discriminatory repercussions of an outdated system designed for white British people.

I’m so pleased to see this work featured on the FRONT PAGE of the Guardian. THANK YOU to everyone who took part in, and supported, this research. Finally, your experiences are getting the exposure that’s needed to bring these issues to the forefront 🙏🏼

Recently, I was invited to speak at the Alzheimer’s Society Annual Conference in London. I chaired a session on diagnosis in people from ethnic minority backgrounds, which involved a panel of inspiring South Asian women who discussed their experiences as carers. Some very important issues were raised along with a presentation from me about current issues and challenges based on the evidence.

Following this session, I was interviewed by the South Asian Media group, Britain's biggest Asian publishing house and I’m pleased to share that these issues have been covered in the Eastern Eye newspaper. @easterneyenews

Now that Dementia Action Week 2022 has come to an Now that Dementia Action Week 2022 has come to an end, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who engaged with my posts last week. I have shared lots of resources that have been developed following a year's worth of research. Thank you to all of you for liking, commenting and sharing them amongst your networks.

Dementia Action Week may have come to an end but my plight to support people from 'underserved' communities has only just begun. There are lots of projects in the pipeline that are being developed as a result of all the work I have shared with you so please do continue to watch this space.

Based on true events, this short film dipicts what Based on true events, this short film dipicts what it looks like when you're south Asian, caring for a loved one with dementia, with no culturally appropriate support from services, your family or community. Please note, that some scenes may be upsetting for viewers.

This week I’ve discussed the need to raise awareness about dementia in south Asian communities and help defeat the stigma and shared resources to help empower and encourage people to get their diagnosis for Punjabi people.

Whilst there’s a need to educate the community, there’s also a need to educate service providers about the consequences for families when they don’t have access to culturally appropriate support.

There’s no sugar coating the unconscious bias and discrimination faced by south Asians when accessing services.

When a person has no support from services, their family or their community, where do they go? There are so many people from south Asian communities caring for a loved one with dementia at home, alone, struggling.

To raise awareness about this, we produced a film for the ADAPT toolkit I shared with you previously, to demonstrate the importance of this toolkit which is designed to help services deliver more culturally appropriate support.

Thank you @bluebellfilms for another, powerful film, and to all those that took the time to share their stories with us. We hope this toolkit is a positive step towards better services for south Asians affected by dementia.

NEW TOOLKIT TO IMPROVE DEMENTIA CARE FOR THE SOUTH NEW TOOLKIT TO IMPROVE DEMENTIA CARE FOR THE SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITY!!

Ive been really excited to share this project with you! After over a year of hard work, the toolkit is live in time for Dementia Action Week!

Did you know that there are differences in how people from South Asian communities use dementia services? Research tells us that symptoms of dementia are more likely to be missed or misinterpreted by NHS and other services; As South Asian people are more likely to receive a diagnosis at a later stage of their illness, this limits their access to NICE recommended treatment. People from South Asian communities are also more likely to seek support from local community organisations they are familiar with than from NHS and statutory services.

The differences in access to help can mean that, compared with white British people, South Asian people living with dementia and their carers are potentially disadvantaged.

To tackle this issue, we have developed a toolkit that will provide enhanced care for the south Asian community!!

This toolkit aims to provide more accessible, tailored resources enabling services to provide more culturally appropriate care.

Designed to address the uphill struggle that many people from South Asian backgrounds face, the toolkit includes short films, animations, awareness raising materials, assessments and post-diagnostic support – all of which have been culturally and linguistically adapted for people from South Asian communities.

It’s been a pleasure to work with all partners on this team!

Have you seen the resources around dementia that i Have you seen the resources around dementia that is now available to Punjabi-speaking people?

Throughout the week I have shared information about dementia, its diagnosis and all the work that is being done to help people from South Asian community understand the condition. Using findings from the participant research I conducted last year, I have supported @alzheimerssoc to develop resources in Punjabi as part of a pilot project. These were developed with guidance from an amazing group of people I brought together including, South Asian carers of people living dementia, people living with dementia, clinicians and community workers.

This is just the beginning of the important work being done to make resources and help readily available to those from South Asian backgrounds who have a family member or are themselves experiencing symptoms of dementia or have been given a diagnosis of dementia.
